Senior Data Engineer – Cloud & GIS Analytics

About the role

Mapbox is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead the design and implementation of algorithmic stages for its high‑precision HD Maps platform. The role sits within the HD Maps team and focuses on building scalable cloud‑native data pipelines that power automotive and GIS customers.

Key responsibilities

• Define, design and roadmap algorithmic components for cloud applications, translating requirements into production‑ready solutions.
• Develop and optimise data processing stages using Python, SQL, AWS services and Apache Spark.
• Collaborate with multiple R&D and engineering teams to integrate analytics into mapping products.
• Maintain reliable data workflows with orchestration tools such as Airflow, Dagster, Prefect or Luigi.
• Engage directly with customers to understand use‑cases and ensure solutions meet strategic objectives.

Required profile

• Strong software engineering fundamentals and expertise in at least one language (Python, Scala or Java).
• Proven experience building large‑scale data pipelines on AWS or another cloud platform.
• Deep knowledge of SQL query optimisation and distributed computing concepts.
• Hands‑on experience with Apache Spark and data workflow orchestration.
• Ability to make architectural decisions balancing scalability, reliability and maintainability.
• Excellent communication skills and fluency in English.
